A trip of lifetime is something we travel enthusiasts all want to experience. Is that seeing the Northern Lights from an igloo in Iceland or a Christmas Market Cruise in some of Europe’s oldest cities? Well, Chile wants to be a part of that discussion. They’ve recently opened a hiking trail that covers a third of the country and connects 17 National Parks. If you’ve wanted to visit Patagonia, this is an incredible way to do it.
The Route of Parks is the direct result of conservation efforts by Douglas Tompkins, late founder of The North Face, and Kristine McDivitt Tompkins, his wife and former Patagonia CEO. They purchased millions of acres in Chile and Argentina during that 90s. Douglas and Kristine Tompkins were committed to protecting the land from developers. In 2015, Douglas Tompkins died in a kayaking accident, but Kristine’s conservation efforts continue. Their foundation, the Tompkins Conservation, donated a huge portion of their land to the Chilean government for the development of National Parks in 2017.
As a result of their donations Chile has created five new National Parks: Pumalín Douglas Tompkins National Park, Melimoyu National Park, Patagonia National Park, Cerro Castillo National Park, and Kawésqar National Park. The Chilean government was also able to extend three of their existing National Parks.
Route of Parks
The aptly named trail spans 1,740 miles with glaciers, mountains, and waterfalls along the way. Hikers will be able to visit 24 ecosystems and have the opportunity to see 140 bird species and 46 mammal species. There are stopping points along the trails with restaurants, picnic tables, and restrooms. For more information and suggested itineraries be sure to visit their website, rutadelosparques.org.
