We’ve all been on high alert when it comes to germs since this has been one of the worst Flu seasons in history. Avoiding germs and the possibility of coming in contact with them is easier when you are in familiar environments like work or home. But what can you do when you fly to help prevent the catching and spreading of germs? This question is especially important when you fly out of a busy airport like Ft. Lauderdale International Airport as there’s no way to escape exposure before or while on the plane. Getting sick is the last thing you want when you’re headed on vacation or a work trip so take these precautions the next time you fly.
Keep it Clean
While we all hope that airplanes are thoroughly cleaned before we board, that’s not always the case. Viruses and bacteria have been found on tray tables and arm rests. Always travel with wet wipes or other sanitizing wipes. It only takes a few seconds to clean the areas that you’ll be in contact with the most during your flight. And since you’ll probably place your phone on the tray table at some point during the flight, you will definitely be glad you cleaned it first.
Staying hydrated will help prevent you from getting sick. Dehydration compromises the immune system, putting you at risk to the germs you come in contact with. Flying increases your chances of becoming dehydrated. Make a conscious effort to continually drink water throughout the flight. Avoid having too much caffeine or alcohol on the plane as these can dehydrate you.
Whether you choose Airborne, Emergen-C, or regular Vitamin C capsules, be sure to take your vitamins before your flight. They will help your immune system fight off any viruses or bacteria that it comes in contact with. Taking vitamins daily while on your trip and before your return flight can also help prevent illness.
Good Hygiene is Key
While you may not be able to avoid germs completely, you prevent them from spreading by practicing good hygiene. Washing your hands thoroughly is the best way to avoid getting sick. Warm water and soap is all you need, but if you don’t want to use the airplane’s bathroom you can use hand sanitizer. You’ll have to have a container that complies with carryon rules for liquids and make sure it is at least 60% alcohol. Once you get off the airplane head straight for the nearest bathroom to wash your hands.
If you are sick and have travel plans coming up, consider rescheduling your flight. This may be easier said than done if you don’t have travel insurance. But talk to your airline if you are interested in postponing due to illness. Your fellow passengers will appreciate it. If you absolutely must travel you can always wear a mask to help prevent the spread of your germs.
