While travel doesn’t have to be expensive, it does cost money. There’s simply no getting around it. Many people start saving when they have a destination in mind already like a summer vacation or a big holiday trip to see family and friends. We’ve found it’s easier to take advantage of last minute deals and we can travel more often if we are always adding to our travel fund. It doesn’t have to be a lot and you don’t have to feel deprived with our travel saving tips. And the next time there’s a flash sale on JetBlue? You’ll be able to take advantage of it.

Set a Budget
By setting a budget you are able to see where you’re spending money. $50 a month on coffee? $200 on take out? Still paying for cable? When you lay it out you can see where and how you can cut back on spending. Take your savings and put it into your travel fund. Skip a $5 dollar coffee here or there and your travel fund will grow.
Shop Smart
When you do shop, take advantage of all of the tricks out there to maximize your money. There are apps like Ibotta and Dosh that give cash back just for shopping at your regular stores. If your coffee shop or favorite restaurant have loyalty programs or apps with rewards, join them. When you do redeem a reward, transfer the amount that you would have spent into your travel fund.
Save Your Points
Most credit cards with points offer extra bonus points by activating special offers or shopping through their web portal. And there are plenty of reward cards out there without an annual fee. As an example, the Chase Freedom card is currently offering an extra 5% points on department store purchases, including if you buy online. Add that to their extra 4% offer at Macy’s online by shopping through Chase’s web portal and it’s a no brainer. But remember, you only want to charge things to your card if you can pay off the balance every month. Otherwise your interest costs will offset any points you may have earned.
Travel Saving Tips
Increasing your travel fund is just one part of successfully saving on travel. The other happens when you book your trip.
- Don’t pay $15 dollars or more per day to park at the airport, save and book offsite airport parking.
- Use Skyscanner or AirfareWatchDog to find the best deals on flights.
- Save on baggage fees by packing a carry on.
- Save money on accommodations. Book a room without a view or rent a VRBO.
- Use the metro system or public transportation over Ubers and taxis if you can.
