The middle seat is considered one of the worst seats on an airplane, but there are rows and rows of them. Sometimes it’s impossible to avoid sitting in a middle seat. If you’re traveling with someone, booked your flight late, or don’t want to pay extra to choose your seat, you may find yourself in the middle. Luckily there are a few things you can do to increase your middle seat comfort.

Pack a Kit

Preparation is key on any flight, but especially when you want to maximize your middle seat comfort. Pack a small kit with all of the items that make your inflight experience more enjoyable. If you’re hoping to get some rest we recommend a great set of noise-cancelling headphones, a neck pillow for support, and an eye mask. Some of us know we aren’t going to be able to sleep in the middle seat and for those travelers you’ll want to pack reading material or download music or movies in advance. For comfort you should include lip balm, moisturizers (scent free if you can, you never want anything overly scented on an airplane), and snacks in your kit.

Apply Ointment in Advance

A middle seat assignment can lead to fatigue and aches or pains in your neck, back, or knees. If you have problems with any of those areas you may want to apply some pain-relief ointment.

Dress Comfortably

While we don’t recommend traveling in your pajamas, you will really want to consider what you wear when you have a middle seat. It’s highly likely you’ll feel restricted already. You don’t want to wear anything that will make that worse. Avoid tight or constricting clothes. You’ll also want to skip any fabrics that could be irritating. Your middle seat comfort will improve dramatically when your outfit is comfortable.

Clean Your Area

Wiping down and disinfecting any surfaces in your area is a must at all times. Clean your screen, tray, seatbelt, call button, and armrests.

Use the Armrests

Speaking of arm rests, travel etiquette dictates that the person in the middle seat gets the armrests. This doesn’t mean you should stake your claim by throwing out your elbows into your seat mates’ space, but don’t feel uncomfortable using both armrests.

Maximize Your Space

One of the keys to middle seat comfort is to maximize your space. Every inch counts. Try to avoid putting anything under the seat in front of you. If you need to store your personal item, make it small. Your legs and feet will thank you when they can stretch out a little further.
