Record Travel Predicted
U.S. Airlines are projecting that 16.1 million passengers, worldwide, will fly over Labor Day 2017. This is a record. The number of passengers marks a five percent increase from 2016’s estimated 15.4 million travelers. For calculations, the travel period for this Labor Day is Wednesday, August 30, 2017 through Tuesday, September 5, 2017. Airlines for America predicts that U.S. airlines will add 133,000 spaces per day with more flights or larger planes.
Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, Los Angeles International Airport, and O’Hare International Airport in Chicago are estimated to be the busiest airports. This was based on departing seats in scheduled service. If those are airports you will be flying in or out of, keep it in mind and plan accordingly. Onsite airport parking lots can sell out, be prepared for that if you haven’t made your airport parking reservations in advance. In order to avoid that issue, consider choosing an off airport site that will allow you to book in advance. Get to the airport early and make sure you are ready to head through security. It’s too late to apply for TSA-Precheck, but consider it getting it before the holiday travel season begins.
The busiest days will most likely be that Friday, September 1, followed by Thursday, August 31, and Monday, September 4. While the week will be full of travelers, it’s coming at a time when the airline industry has experienced record lows for mishandled baggage and involuntarily bumping passengers.
