Traveling internationally requires a completely different set of checklist items than when you are flying domestically. Trust us, things will come up that you didn’t even know to expect. But it’s nothing you can’t handle. Our International Pretravel Checklist is just what you need to ensure your upcoming trip goes off without a hitch.

Check Your Passport’s Expiration Date
Most of us would think that as long as our passport is valid during our travel dates that we’d be fine. However, most countries require your passport to be valid for a certain length of time after your travel dates. For example, your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your departure from their country. Other countries require six months. Before you book your trip, check the country’s requirements. And remember it can take at least 2 to 3 weeks to renew your passport even if you pay to expedite.
Notify Your Credit Cards
Credit card theft is rampant and that’s why most credit cards will put a hold on your card if unusual or suspicious activity occurs. This includes international transactions. Notify your bank of your destination and travel dates to ensure you won’t have any issues. Most major companies will let you add your travel information in the app.
Check for Foreign Transaction Fees
Some credit cards will charge you a foreign transaction fee that’s usually about 3%. That will add up quickly. Check to make sure you have at least one credit card that doesn’t charge a fee for foreign transactions.
Exchange Currency
While it can be easy to travel in the United States without cash, not all countries are the same. You will want to have some of the local currency. You’ll get the worst exchange rates at the airport, which is why this is a crucial item on your international pretravel checklist. Your bank will often times give you the best exchange rate and some won’t even charge a service fee. What’s the catch? They may need to order the currency and that can take 2 or 3 business days to arrive.
Get the Embassy’s Information
Whenever you are traveling abroad, you will want to have easy access to your embassy’s information. This includes the address, phone number, and normal operating hours. You can find the information here. Save their details in your phone and have a hard copy as well.
Get Vaccinated
Before you travel to certain countries you may be required to get certain immunizations. Your doctor may also recommend other vaccinations depending on your destination.
Get the Right Travel Adapter
Don’t wait till you arrive to realize that you need a travel adapter.
Check Travel Alerts and Protests
You always want to see if there is a travel advisory for your destination. It may be slight or it may prompt you to postpone your trip. Either way you need to be aware. At the same time, check to see if there are any ongoing, planned, or suspected protests occurring. You don’t want to get to Paris just to find out that public transportation is closed as well as multiple attractions and museums.
