No one enjoys going through the TSA lines, especially when they’re longer than ever. The holiday season is when TSA lines are the longest. They get backed up not only because there are just so many travelers this time of year, but because there are so many infrequent flyers. They don’t know the rules and they aren’t prepared to go through security. We have seen countless travelers holding up the line because they are asking TSA officers questions that were answered on all of the signs up to the scanners. Here’s everything you know to be prepared to get through TSA lines quickly and efficiently.

Arrive Early
When you’re traveling during peak times you’ll always want to arrive early. Everything will probably take longer than it usually does and this includes your trip to the airport. The last thing you want is to become stressed because you’re tight on time. Becoming frustrated can increase the time it takes to get through security. Trust us, we’ve been there and it’s simply best to arrive early. For domestic flights arrive 2 hours early and for international destinations arrive 3 hours early.
Strategize Your Packing
There are several things you’ll need to get out of your bag quickly to pass through security. These include your ID, boarding pass (once you show your ID and boarding pass, put them away in your bag as you won’t need them again), laptop, and quart sized bag of liquids. Don’t pack these at the bottom of your carry on. Everyone is delayed when you have to open your bag and dig around. And on that note, get these items out and ready before it’s your turn. For more information about what you can bring in your carry-on or personal item see TSA’s full list here.

Strategize Your Outfit
Yes, you still have to take off your shoes. With this in mind, wear shoes that are easy to get on and off. You may also want to pick shoes that you can wear socks with to avoid touching the airport floor with your bare feet. Be prepared that large jackets will have to come off and so will hats and belts. If you don’t need the belt, don’t wear it on the flight. You can wear jewelry and your watch so don’t waste time trying to take them off. Or if you’re overly cautious, keep them off until you’re at your gate. After you get through security you can help the travelers behind you by collecting all of your items and walking to nearby benches or other free areas to put on your shoes and put away your items.
Empty Your Pockets
They mean it. Take out any loose change or receipts while you’re waiting in line to avoid a further delay.
TSA PreCheck
Most of these inconveniences can be avoided with TSA PreCheck. But remember, if you register for it or are surprised with the designation on your boarding pass, get familiar with the rules. There’s no benefit to TSA PreCheck if you insist on taking off your shoes (you don’t have to) or unpacking your bag to get your ziplock bag of liquids out (you don’t have to do that either). If you do start doing these things you’ll only frustrate the TSA agents and other travelers. Let other people go ahead of you until you’re ready. The rules will be posted on signs all over.
