Thanksgiving
The Thanksgiving holiday is one of the busiest travel times of the year. Expedia has analyzed their historical data and announced that you’ll find the cheapest airfares from October 29 through November 13. But be aware that AAA suggests buying your tickets before Halloween. Either way, prices will dramatically increase the week before Thanksgiving. It’s suggested you’ll end up paying 20% more if you book that week.
Another way to save more is by not flying on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. It’s the busiest travel day as most people don’t get Monday or Tuesday off for the holiday. You could also consider returning on Friday or Saturday instead of Sunday to score cheaper seats.
Christmas
Expedia projects that the best time to book your Christmas flights will be anytime from November 23 to December 9. There’s usually a lull in travel bookings at that time, which means airlines will be pricing flights more reasonably. According to Expedia, you could save about 15% if you book during that window. Flying out on the actual holiday is always the cheapest. And because Christmas falls on a Wednesday this year, the most expensive days to fly will be the Saturday and Sunday before and after the holiday. Consider flying out on Monday and back on Friday to avoid the price increases.
Booking Too Soon
While it’s too close to the holidays to worry if you’re booking too soon, we do have a word of caution for the next holiday season. Booking airfare too far in advance can end up costing you money. The earlier you book, the more the airlines know you have to travel on those dates. For travelers who booked their 209 holiday travel three or more months in advance, Expedia estimates they will have paid 15% more than those who booked closer to the holiday. This is applies to travel for anniversaries, weddings, and vacations so keep that in mind!
