State Parks in Minnesota

Itasca State Park – Park Rapids

Arguably one of the most famous state parks in Minnesota, it’s no surprise that Itasca State Park has a place on our list. Here you’ll find the headwaters of the Mississippi River as well as a multitude of lakes and old growth forests. With 49 miles of hiking trails you may be interested in taking advantage of their campsites. Or you can stay at the Douglas Lodge.

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park – Two Harbors

What makes Split Rock Lighthouse one of the best state parks in Minnesota isn’t surprising. It’s the lighthouse. This historic structure and it’s location on the North Shore of Lake Superior makes Split Rock Lighthouse State Park a must see. Start your visit by hiking along the Superior Hiking Trail before touring the inside of the lighthouse. There’s even an adjacent history center and guided tours that run continuously throughout the day if you want to learn more.

Great River Bluffs State Park – Winona

Featuring more than 6 miles of hiking trails, Great River Bluffs State Park overlooks the expansive Mississippi River. For the best views, you’ll want to hike the King’s Bluff Nature Trail. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars! There are several perches on half-dome bluffs and rock cliffs that are perfect for bird watching. Red-tailed hawks and 100 other bird species call this area home.

Grand Portage State Park – Grand Portage

Waterfall lovers will not be disappointed at Grand Portage State Park. It’s home to the highest waterfall in all of Minnesota. For the best views of the 120-foot High Falls, take the half-mile, ADA accessible boardwalk to the viewing platform. To see some of the other waterfalls at Grand Portage State Park, travel the Middle Falls 5-mile hiking loop. Fun Fact: Grand Portage State Park is the only state park in Minnesota to not be owned by the state. Located on the US/Canadian border, the park is available due to the efforts and lease agreements between the Grand Portage Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe and the Department of Natural Resources.

Soudan Underground Mine State Park – Soudan

If you’re looking for a unique experience, Soudan Underground Mine State Park is it. While most state parks have you exploring the environment above ground, this state park takes you a half-mile below ground. It’s located at the first iron mine in Minnesota with mine tours available from 10am to 4pm from Memorial Day through September and weekends in October. If you or someone else in your group isn’t too keen on going underground there is a self-guided audio tour you can take above ground. While the mine is the main attraction at this state park, there are a lot of other activities you’ll want to enjoy. You can hike to banded iron formation, participate in a geocache, and relax at the shores of Lake Vermillion.
