Florida is an amazing place to live, but sometimes we want to experience winter like everyone else. The holidays are a great time to get in a family trip and visit the snow. Packing for a snow getaway is a lot more complicated than our usual trips to the beach. It can be even harder when you’re not used to the cold and you want to pack a ton of cold weather gear. While parking at Self Park FLL comes with complimentary luggage assistance no matter how many bags you have, the airlines are going to charge you. The major airlines have already increased their checked baggage fees! That’s why we’ve put together some tips and tricks to help you pack those bulky winter clothes.

If You Wear it, You Don’t Have to Pack it

That’s right. Our first tip is to just not pack it. A winter coat takes up valuable luggage space and even though it’s likely to be air conditioning weather in Ft. Lauderdale, you should wear your coat on the plane. The same goes for your boots and you may want to throw on a scarf as well. Luckily, if you’re parking at Self Park FLL so you’ll be dropped off (from our air conditioned shuttles) right at your terminal to minimize your time in the heat. Best part? You won’t be freezing when you arrive at your destination.

Layering to Keep Warm

It’s certainly tempting for us Floridians to bundle up in a thick sweater and huge coat, but often times you can stay warm just by layering. Light layering with undershirts or camisoles, long sleeved shirts, and a light sweater is the perfect thing to wear under your jacket. Not only will you be more comfortable indoors (as everyone will be blasting the heat) you can mix and match for new outfits.

Accessorize

You’ll definitely want to pack a hat, gloves, and scarves if you’re headed to the cold. The key thing to remember here is to pick neutrals so you only have to pack one hat and one pair of gloves. You need all the space you can get in your luggage so you don’t want to waste it on accessories you don’t need.

Use Every Inch

We’ve all packed luggage before, but now is the time to get creative. You don’t want any extra space to go to waste. Are you packing a pair of boots? Roll up your leggings and put them inside. Socks and other small items can be packed in your shoes too.

Downsize

Often times we throw in our full sized products because we’re checking our bags. But, you may want to consider investing in travel-sized containers. Not only does it free up space, it will cut down on the weight. Don’t forget, just because you can fit everything into your bag, doesn’t mean you should. Be careful to monitor the weight of your bag so you aren’t charged additional fees!
